India’s startup ecosystem continues to create opportunities for entrepreneurs, innovators and emerging businesses. However, building a successful startup involves more than developing a product or service. Founders must also understand business registration, government recognition, regulatory compliance and the support programmes available to eligible enterprises.
Startup India registration is an important step for qualifying businesses seeking recognition under the Government of India’s Startup India initiative. Through recognition from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), eligible startups may access various benefits related to intellectual property, government procurement, compliance and selected funding or tax incentive programmes, subject to their respective conditions.
Startup India is a government initiative launched on 16 January 2016 to encourage entrepreneurship, innovation and employment generation. The term Startup India registration commonly refers to obtaining DPIIT recognition after establishing an eligible business entity.
It is important to understand that DPIIT recognition is different from company incorporation. Entrepreneurs must first establish an eligible legal entity and then apply for recognition through the prescribed online process.

Before applying, founders should check whether their business satisfies the applicable DPIIT recognition conditions. Under the framework introduced in February 2026, the principal criteria include:
DeepTech applicants must also satisfy additional conditions applicable to their category. Entrepreneurs should verify the latest official criteria before submitting an application.
DPIIT recognition can help eligible businesses access several forms of government support. However, individual benefits may require separate applications or additional eligibility checks.
Eligible startups may access intellectual property support, including assistance with patent applications and expedited examination under applicable programmes. Protecting patents, trademarks and other intellectual property can help businesses safeguard their innovations.
Recognised startups may benefit from certain relaxations in government procurement requirements, subject to applicable tender conditions. This can help eligible businesses explore opportunities to supply products or services to government organisations.
The Startup India framework provides self-certification and other compliance-related support for specified laws and conditions. Businesses must still comply with the laws applicable to their activities and remain responsible for accurate reporting.
DPIIT recognition may help startups access relevant government-backed funding programmes, incubators and other support initiatives. Recognition alone does not guarantee funding, investment or loan approval.
Eligible startups may apply for specified tax incentives, including the profit-linked deduction under Section 80-IAC, where applicable. Such benefits have separate eligibility requirements and approval processes. DPIIT recognition by itself does not automatically grant tax exemption.
The DPIIT recognition process is completed online through the National Single Window System (NSWS).
Step 1: Establish Your Business
Register your business under an eligible legal structure. Keep the incorporation or registration certificate and relevant entity details available.
Step 2: Create an NSWS Account
Visit the official National Single Window System website and create an account using the required applicant and business information.
Step 3: Select Startup Registration
After logging in, open the approvals section, select the relevant central approval and search for “Registration as a Startup.” Add the application to your dashboard.
Step 4: Complete the Application
Enter the required information about your business, including its legal structure, incorporation details, industry, business activities and authorised representative.
You should also explain the problem your business addresses, your proposed solution, the innovation involved and the potential for growth, employment generation or wealth creation.
Step 5: Submit Supporting Documents
Prepare the incorporation or registration certificate and any other documents requested by the portal. Depending on your business and application, supporting material may include a website, pitch deck, product demonstration, proof of concept or intellectual property details.
Step 6: Submit and Track Your Application
Review the application carefully before submission. Monitor its status and respond to any requests for additional information. If approved, the startup receives a digital DPIIT Certificate of Recognition.
DPIIT does not charge a government fee for the recognition certificate. Applicants should submit the application using their own business details and official contact information.
